The BMW Concept 4 showcases the next 4 Series Coupe with a very distinct grille. The automaker says the grille is a reference to classic models like the BMW 328 or the BMW 3.0 CSi. The grille continues to draw your eye, almost a distraction from the otherwise perfectly balanced design. BMW has a long and strong historical tradition of pushing the walls of their own designs.
The grille is so overpowering that the hood has to even bulge outward to accommodate it. Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW design, said in a press release, “The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars. The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range.”
The Concept 4 is a new insight at what BMW has coming with the next-generation 4 Series Coupe and M4. They have a new design of lighting clusters in the front and rear. The headlights have no glass cover over their three-dimensional LED elements, while the taillights are uncovered with fiber-optic elements. That specific feature stretches horizontally under the rear spoiler.
The Concept 4 continues BMW’s fascination with huge grilles that are oversized variations of the company’s famous kidney-shaped. Hopefully, the production 4 Series Coupe keeps the clean lines of the Concept 4, but tones down the overpowering grille. BMW definitely took the opportunity at the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce to the world that a new 4 Series is on its way.
