Renault takes the Nurburgring lap record. The Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R took the record from the Honda Civic Type R with a time of 7 minutes 40.1 seconds. That’s 3.7 seconds faster than the Civic. Renault reclaimed the record with this cool new hatchback driven by Laurent Hugron.
This record-setting Renault runs the turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four producing 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Not only does it weigh less than previous Trophy models by about 287 pounds. It rides on Bridgestone S007 tires wrapped on carbon-fiber wheels. It has an Akrapovic exhaust, Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspension components.
May 24 will be the official, and will provide extensive details on the Megane R.S. Trophy-R. It will go on sale in Europe by the end of the year, and production will be limited to a few hundred units. This model won’t be available in the United States, but we will take the small win that the previous winner was a Honda Civic Type R. Two years ago, when Honda took the win, it was a defining moment for what a front-wheel drive car was capable of on the Nurburgring track.
