Mercedes-Benz will soon join the club of automakers offering digital upgrades to their clients. A-Class owners will be the first ones to see this option available. They will be able to use the Mercedes-Benz Me App Store, Mercedes’ online store, or the car’s head unit to add features to the MBUX system. The initial three applications in the program will be digital radio, navigation, and Smartphone Integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. 

Navigation will be a popular option to Mercedes owners. The Multimedia Package in the A-Class includes augmented reality and Traffic Sign Assist and is offered at upgrade from the dealer. Subscriptions are becoming a norm for customers to utilize specialized technology programs. Having access to downloadable content provides customers with continuous up-to-date information and desired options. 

Subscription models do create some concern on what direction automakers will go with this option. Compare potential problems to listening to music on an app for free. At first you can deal with all the ads, because you have access to all that music FOR FREE. Eventually, you start hearing the ads offering an upgraded version, with less or no commercials and ads for a fee. Eventually, you are willing to pay to avoid the interruption of the ads. Subscriptions could have competitors looking to offer the next best thing for a lower premium. The future is here folks. It may not be flying cars and time travel, but we are inching closer into having everything available with the swipe of a card.
