Ford releases information that the 760-hp Shelby GT500 will do 0-100-0 in only 10.6 seconds. The Shelby’s 5.2-liter V-8 is more powerful than even the Chevy Corvette ZR1. Ford has been taking their sweet time releasing any specs of the Shelby GT500, but stated it would be the fastest and most powerful Mustang to date. This model will actually be the most powerful production car in Ford’s history, lapping the GT by 113 horsepower.
The Shelby GT500 uses a 2.65-liter supercharger, giving the car a 12 psi of boost that delivers 760 horsepower at 7,300 rpm and 625 pound-feet of torque from 3,000 rpm to redline. Comparatively, the GT350 has 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. This power dominates every other production car on the road, except the Dodge Challenger Demon or Redeye. Ford engineers confirm that the engine makes “well over 850 gross horsepower” before driveline loss.
Ford focused attention on providing an adequate cooling system. An air-to-water intercooler rests on top of the supercharger, while six radiators are used to cool the oil and transmission. Plus, the design of the front end helps with cooling and aerodynamics. This Shelby incorporates the help of a quick-shifting DCT, 16.5-inch front rotors and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires to hit the zero to 100 mph and back to zero in 10.6 seconds.
The Tremec transmission is the first time Ford has offered a dual-clutch in a Mustang or Shelby car. Currently, the Mustang is available with a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic. A carbon-fiber driveshaft connects the seven-speed DCT to a Torsten limited-slip differential with 3.73 gearing.
Ford has not released the final or official specs on the Shelby GT500. Pricing will be $73,995 and deposits can be made at local Ford dealers.
