Check out the Ford Bronco patent application: roll-up roof transitions to slide-out canopy. This is one option, fingers crossed, that makes it to production. Patent records are public, so the world is watching everything related to the new upcoming Ford Bronco. The recently discovered Ford patent shows a possible cloth roof option with a roll-out canopy.
Motor Trend initially found the patent application for removable doors. Next, the patent for another set of half door surfaced, and with more investigating, the cloth top option was found. The cloth top can be extended beyond the vehicle to make a canopy. The patents show some possible great features heading this way for the Ford Bronco.
Ford Global Technologies filed the patent application in Germany showing 15 illustrations demonstrating various aspects of a multi-functional and multi-use SUV cloth top. The abstract states: A roof that includes a first material and a second material, wherein the first and second material are selectively pulled out to cover at least a portion of a passenger compartment of the motor vehicle, wherein the first material is configured to filter the light to a different extent than the second substance. When the hardtop is off, another option for protection is essential. Instead of only one option, this patent offers two options of a cloth or screen layer. Looking at Figure 15, the roll-up device would allow for the material to be pulled out opposite from the vehicle to make a canopy. This option is very functional for the everyday owner.
The automaker has not released any official information regarding the patent or possible options, but hopefully, these options make it into production. The upcoming Ford Bronco is creating a long list of reason to buy.
